The physical geography of Gujrat may be divided into four parts. Such as Rann, Kachchh, peninsula, the plain land and Kathiyawar. The peninsula is surrounded by three sides such as small Rann of Kachchha
to Arabian Sea on west and south and Bay of Cambay to east. For three sides surrounding Saurashtra is peninsula in geography. The Girinar forest is situated in the peninsula. The Girinar is the only one habitat of
lion of India. Porbandar, birth place of Gandhiji is also in Sourashtra. The southern part of Saurashtra on the coast of Arabian sea was known as Prabhas Kshetra which means a place of brightness. The brightness was due to barbanal that means risen fire from sea for natural gas. There may be volcanic eruption in the adjoining areas. For the natural fire and light the area was named Prabhas-Kshetra. There are many small and big relics of sun-temple. The area was also known by the holy place of fire or Agnidev. It is remarkable that there were also twelve sun-temples. It is said that in first phase there were habitations of the Aryan race in the area. They were worshipers of sun. The sun worshippers were known by SOUR. The land established by Sour was called SOURASHTR. A land of Sours. At present the Kathiyawar class has been constructed a remarkable sun temple. It reminds the tradition of sun-worshipping.
Rann : A shallow wetland is called RANN which is situated on the north-west of Gujarat. The area of Rann is 23,309 Sq. KM. Once it was sub-sea of Arabian sea. For earth-quake and the alluvium of river
Supi the bottom of sub-sea became high and created a shallow wetland. The north part is known by Great Rann and the east part by small Rann. In summer the Rann becomes entirely dry and treeless and white salt covers the sandyland. Like this desert is called Rann. The Sanskrit word Rannd means unable to grow trees or flowers. Therefore, the wetland was named Rann according to Rannd.
Kachchh : The Kachchh peninsula of 22,343Sq KM. Is situated to the south of Great Rann. In general Kachchh means wetland but it is not right in the sense of word - origin. Let us try to find out the real
meaning of it.
