In want of plain land Kalinga spread towards north-west along the river Brahmani till Sundergarh district. The new land was high or Ucha or Ut and it was considered highland of Kalinga. Thrrefore it was called Ut-
KALINGA. The changes may be written as follows:-
Ut-Kalinga ---> Utkali ---> Utkal
Again this Utkal spreads towards north-west along the river Baitarani. The new area was more high. The first utterance Ut of Utkal and compairing Sanskrit word TAR formed the name Utra or Udra. This may
be written as follows :-
Ut + tar ---> Udra
Again for the difference of utterance Udra changed as Odra. At present Odra may considered till present Keonjhar and Mayurbhanja district. Again Udra creates Urissa and Odra creates Orissa or Odisha.
