There are many opinions regarding the name origin of Dhaka. Accordsing to popular opinion thereare many butea frondosa or Dhak-trees. Dhak creates name Dhaka. As many opinions this is not logical.
The cause would be explainded in time.
Dhaka city is situated on the north bank of Buriganga or old Ganga. Bangladesh is revery country. The Brahmaputra river entiers northen Bangladesh from India and divides itself into two flows as named Jamuna and old Brahmaputra. The old Brahmaputra flows east-south a long way and meets the Meghna river. Again Jamuna flows southward and meets the Padma River in the district Pabana. Before meeting the Padma branch river Dhaleswari comes out from the Jamuna and enriers in the district of Dhaka. In this district Buriganga comes out from Dhaleswari and flows to the south-west border of Dhaka Mahanagar. From city the Budiganga meets the Dhaleswari. The joint flow at first meet the branch Sitalakhsa of Brahmaputra. The joint flows eastward to meet Meghna and again flows southward to meet the Padma. Finally the joint flow of all rivers falls into the Bay of Bengal.
Now we have to turn towards past. Speacialy we have to know about the flow of Padma of past. According to the map of Vanden Brouke (1660AD.) The ancient way of Padma was through Rampur, Boyalier, Chalanbil, river Dhaleswari, Dhaka and would fall into the Bay of Bengal Via Meghna. According to the poet Kritivas of 15th century the southward Bhagirathi was known as Chhotoganga (Small Ganga)
Padma has Baroganga (Big Ganga). The Baroganga would flow by the south side of Dhaka. The Baroganga that is Padma of huge water moved south from north and combined Meghna. For moving north to south Baroganga flows in new way, the old way of Padma or Baroganga was named Buriganga in place of Baroganga.
We have already knew that for the change of Padma-flow, the water lavel of old way become down. For the downing of water lavel the river bank arises from water and seen land. For the memory of water cover or Jal Dhaka, the bank was named Jal Dhaka or Dhaka in brief. The ancient part of Dhaka city is situated on the bank of Buriganga. The ancient part is flood proned that reminds about the water-cover. Besides this the historical Rampalgram is considered as the capital of Sen-Kings of twelveth century. The Rampalgram is situated on Meghna is not far from Dhaka. The capital might be on the bank of Baroganga (Present Dhakacity) in lieu of Meghna for the better geographycal situation of Dhaka. But then it was not possible for water covered bank. If there would Dhak trees in lieu of water, the trees would cut down for habitation. The Dhak trees were not factor for habition or capital, but water on bank was obstracle for
capital.
The above mentioned descriptions tell us Dhaka is not from Dhak but for Jal Dhaka, It is to write that the western side of Tista river is called Jaldhaka in the district of Rangpur. That means the name of water covered river bank as Jaldhaka is normal matter. According to history, Subedar Islam Khan established his capital in Dhakain 1608 A.D. In this condition the Dhaka is a city of middle age. In conclusion we may
write the entire matter in brief as follows :-
Baroganga ----> Buriganga
Jaldhaka -----> Dhaka
