The Rajbansis of North Bengal celebrates the Gachha Dewa festival in the night of Deepawali. Gachha Dewa means to light pradips (a type of earthen lamp) for the souls of dead forefathers. The most festivals of Rajbansis are according to the Purans or Vedas. Again the south Indians celebrate annual Pitri Tarpan (Regard to dead forefathers) on Kartick Amabasya that is also Deepawali-Night. Though North Indians celibrate annual Pitri Tarpan before one month of Deepawali that the Amabasya of Aswin month.
Before two days of Deepawali, according to Hindu religious book Laxmi, goddess of wealth and Dhanantary, physician of Devas arised from ocean for the churning of ocean by Devas and Danavas. Laxmi
for gaining wealth and Dhanantary for good health are worshiped in this day. In this night a pradip is lighted outside of house at gate for Yama, dev of death. Yama protect from immatured death of worshipers.
Before one day of Deepawali is celebrated Narak Chaturdasi. In this day Lord Krishna killed Narkasur. In easy word it is a day for release from extreme suffering of hell. In this day there is a system of Tarpan offering to fourtteen Devas like Yama, Dharmaraj, Mrityu etc. There is also a system of fourteen pradips lighteeng at evening for forteen serial forefathers. Next day is Amabasy. There is a system of worship to forefathers in morning. Deepawali fesival comes in evening. According to Puranas the souls of forefathers come on Pitri-Paksha (the dark lunar fortnight of Aswin month) to our Earth to get Tarpan and they return to Pitriloke (Lunar heaven)in this night. There is a system of Akash pradip and Ulkadan for lighting the return way of forefathers. For the lighting , forefathers bless to their successors. For blessing the successors get disease free long life and richs for happy life. Like this blessing, the system of pradip lighting introduced. In course of time the activities of money and wealth increased specially in northern and western Bharat. The volume of wealth increased specially in Vaisya-Class (Business class). Automatically the inportance of god and goddess of wealth increased. The worship of Kuber and Laxmi was introdiced with grand pageantry. For this change, the lighting pradips to forefathers became unimportent or disappeared. Pradip to Laxmi became main matter. In course of time pradip lighting became Deepawali festival or Festival of Light in North and West India and by and large all over India and neighbouring countries.
In next period, the return of Lord Ramchandra to Ayodhya, Daityaraj Bali legend were added with the Deepawali. Beside's this,the Jain, the Budhist and the Sikhs were releted with Deepawali. If we think deeply we shall understand that the lighting to forefather is the root of Deepawali festival.
