It is right that at present there is no city or state by name Madras. But there are Madras University and Madras High Court. Madras is practically Madraj in Sanskrit and it means the area whose situation or birth is between two rivers. There are two semi parallel small rivers named Cooum and Adayar flowing west to east in the city and meet seperately the Bay of Bengal. The distance area or land between said rivers was named MADRAJ according word madhya. Madhya means middle. This may be written as follows :-

Cooum. They made fort St. George (1639AD) and cottage for residence. There was a village or small port named Madrajpattanam. Here pattanam means port. According to name Madrajpattanam the fort area was named Madraj or Madras.
According to historian and scholar Muththaia, the land of fort was the gift of governor Damela Vanketappa of king of Chandragiri. Damela requested to name the land according to his father's name Chenapa. Again as to other opinion in 1636 AD. Fransis De purchased the land from the king of Chandragiri. However, the British named the land as Madras in lieu of Chenapa. According to Muththaia theland was near Andhra and it was a habitation Telegu speaking people. The Telegu historians named the place as Chennapattanam. The name Chennpattanam did not gate importance in that age. It got importance on 17th July of 1963 for the naming Chennai of Madras. As to Muththaia the name Chennai is not according to Timil heritage. However, it is normal matter to take word from other language.
A question may arise that the name Madras should be Dravian word as its situation is in Tamil. In response Dharmapuri, Kanyakumari, Nilgiri, Raghunathpuram are district-name and Rameshwaram, Pakshithirtham etc. are holy place names has come from Sanskrit. The most sacred and heritage river Tamraparni of Tamil. The river name also from Sanskrit. Bharat is a country of mixed culture. Therefore mixed language is normal in our India
